CRICKET AT PORTLAND

PAST v. PRESENI

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Advantage was taken of the Portland Cricket Club’s bye on Saturday to play the annual match between the veterans and the elub, otherwise known as Portland’s “Has Beens” and “Will Be’s.’’ The day w'as ideal and the game, as usual, attracted a deal of interest. The veterans, led by the old-timer D. Rogers, batted first, putting up a good performance, the total reaching 76. In passing, we must “congratulate’’ the umpires upon several new decisions which the cricketers had not been previously aware of. J. Cotter took up the attack and bowled A. Whitham with his third ball. However, one of the “new’’ decisions was announced, viz., “the batsman had first hit the ball before being bowled, therefore he wasn’t out. ’’ With this unique escape, runs began to pile up. Chilman and Dayman kept the pace up, ably supported by D. Rodgers, who hit 2 fours and a six, and C. Belson, Things looked bad for the “Colts” when 3 wickets were down for 27, hut Penning (20), Johnson (22) [and Cotter (15) saved the situation and the innings closed for -79. The Veterans’ second innings realised 43 leaving the Coits 40 runs to win, but time was not long enough, 6 wickets being down for 31 when stumps were drawn. Details are as follow.—
