PROJECT WELL RECEIVED.

(Australian Press Association.) (Received 1.51 p.m.) LONDON, January 22.

Mr Baldwin's staement in the Bouse of Commons on the Channel tunnel is generally welcomed in all political quarters.

The project will be discussed by the Tunnel Parliamentary Committee on Wednesday. A member of the Commons, Sir W. Bull, chairman of the Tunnel Committee, says: “I am well satisfied with the position. I could not expect Mr Baldwin to have gone further, as he had raised the question out of party politics. Wo shall now get to the bottom of the matter. No doubt the money will be found immediately. Franco and Italy are willing to put up the whole amount, but they agree that England must have financial control. It will cost roughly £30,000,000 and will take four and a half -years to construct.”

Mr Baldwin's statement was to the effect that he intended to make a thorough examination of the question from all points of view, including the economic aspect, and he asked for the co-operation of the Liberal and Labour parties.
