VATICAN AND STATE
FREEMASONS AROUSED.
RELATIONSHIP 'TO LEAGUE.
{Australian Press Association.) (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, January 21.
The Rome correspondent of the “Morning Post” says there is reason to believe that a vigorous campaign has been initiated by Continental Freemasons to nullify the reconciliation of the Pope and the Italian State, because the Vatican is regarded as an implacable foe of Freemasonry. This was the reason for the secrecy of the preliminary negotiations which the Prime Minister, Signor Mussolini, initiated.
Another question which has arisen, says the correspondent, is the relationship of .the Holy See to the Leagueof Nations in -the event of the Vatican’s return to temporal power. Hitherto the Vatican has been represented at Geneva by the Papal Nuncio at Borne. When the Roman Catholic Church enters the cqraity of nations, however, its ambassadors will have a new standing, with international potentialities. It must be remembered, however, that the negotiations are only in embryo and that a full settlement, or a preliminary settlement, cannot be reached for months to come.
