SPLENDID SERVICE

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE LOSS. In explaining the reason why he was called upon to present the annual report at the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday, .Mr A. R. Crane paid' >a very warm tribute to Mr A. Marshall, the president who ha,d been called to Dunedin, to his own advantage, but to the Chamber ’s loss. Mr Marshall had taken the keenest interest in the affairs of ,the district, -and the dogged determination with which ho followed up every matter which he embarked upon was worthy of emulation by every subsequent occupant of the presidential chair. Mr Crane read a telegram from Mr Marshall,, expressing regret at his inability to -be present and wishing the chamber all success in the future. The telegram was received with applause. During the year, said Mr Crane, the chamber had suffered a very sa.d loss in the- passing of Mr D. Moiklo, who had been vice-president. Although a sick mao, Mr MeiMc had served the interests of the district as a whole by visiting Wellington -and playing a very creditable part in securing -the co-operation of the Railways Department for the granting of Q trucks for Whangarei. The members rose and stood for a time in silence as a mark -of respect to the -raemory of the late vice-presi-dent.
