INSPECTOR’S REPORT

COUNTY NUISANCES,

The County Inspector, Mr W. H, Gillespie, presented the following annual report, which was adopted, at the meeting of the Whangarei County Council on Friday morning:— Health (Infectious and Contagious Disease). —I have, attended and reported to the Department 45 ernes from all parts of the county.

Sanitation. —I have attended to 30 buildings of various kinds, and have inspected and registered 12 butchers’ shops, 10 entitle sale-yards ■which demand periodic inspection, 3 bakehouses, and 2 billiard rooms. Some of those sale-yards have been re-metalled and improved from a sanitary standpoint. I have issued 1400 motor drivers’ licenses, a proportion requiring trials. I have issued 2050 dog cellars, which means practically a house-to-house visit, ,

Heavy Traffic. —In our heavy traffic district 148 licenses have been issued.

Noxious, Weeds on Road Frontages. —Our greatest trouble is absentee owners. In quite a number of cases I have estimated the cost and have written to owners when they can be found, and when I got the money have got a man, to do the work. I have never been able to get any satisfaction from the Crown Lands Department.

Straying Stock. : —Where there is so much unfenced land as we have, this nuisance is likely to be recurring. I suggested some years ago that it would be a good plan if the 'surfacemen in the various ridings would report to one, giving the names of the owners of cat,tie that are allowed to be a nuisance, when I could deal with them. That method has proved effective when, it is carried’out.

The many complaints of nuisances which have been made, mostly regarding come unsanitary matter, I have been able to arrange without going (to law.
