WHANGAREI ASSOCIATION, SATURDAY’S GAMES. The weather on. Saturday afternoon was fine generally for continuation of the Whangarei Cricket Association’s competition series, reports of the games being appended: — ONE RUN VICTORY. NOMADS BEAT ONERAHL At Onerahl, Nomads, lacking the services of Grove,- their best batsman, scored a somewhat unexpected win over the seasiders by the narrowest of margins. The outfield was in a disgraceful condition, the grass being over a foot in height, ruining good fielding, and not giving batsmen a chance for ground shots. The catching of both sides, however, was good. The visitors opened badly, Ryan and Dunn being out with only two on the board. Brainsby and Hedditch, however, indulged in some lively batting, and 31 were hoisted before the third wicket fell. So fax’ none of the batsmen had fallen, bowled or caught, but at 57,- Brainsby, after giving his best display of the season, was'skittled*by Hewlett, whom ho had just previously hit for six. The long grass hampered Menzics’ run-getting, as he is a batsman who keeps most of his shots on the -ground. His 15 was composed entirely of singles. Tilly, with 12, assisted the late batsmen to bring the total to 90. Hewlett puzzled most of the. batsmen but Manson was strangely off the spot, being very rarely on the sticks. The Hcwlotts, father' and sop, gave Onorahi quite a good slant. The younger w r as the first to go, being clean bowled by the third ball Brainsby sent down. B. Mackenzie, however, treated the fast bowling with scant ceremony, executing some lovely exits, when ho did not go out to meet it. Collins came on with the total at 20, and H. Hewlett was brilliantly caught by Menzics. The game took a distinct turn in Nomads’ favour when Mason scooped back to Collins the second ball he received and was out. Veterans Mackenzie, and Drever then joined ip a stand -which revivified Onerahi’s hopes. Both batted splendidly, Drover getting several away to log nicely. However, one got him—on the unpaddod leg, too —with the total at 55, and the umpire gave his decision against the batsman. Painter got a good four, and was showing aggressiveness when

ho went. The newcomer was Chitty, who had not fielded. Despite an absence of two seasons, he showed a pleasing style, and after- S. Mackenzie and Kerr had gone set out to -win the game off his own bat. In this he was not helped greatly by the two batsmen who ' followed, but Stewart, the last man in, played the correct game. Ten were needed when he reached the wicket. Chitty made eight of these, and Stewart blocked right through an over of straight balls prom, Tilly. With two -wanted for victory, Chitty faced Dunn and drove the second ball, for a single. -Stewart missed the fii’st he received, cocked the next up to Mann in the slips, and Nomads had secured a first innings load. Collins handled his bowling very well. In nearly every case after a change a wicket fell in the new bowler’s first over. Nomads played out the hour and half remaining for the loss of seven wickets, Menzies, Collins and Tilly making the game safe- Details are as follow: NOMADiS —Ist Innings, Ryan,, run out 1 Brainsby, b Hewlett 31 Dr.nn, 1.b.w., b Mason 0 Hedditch, run out 13 |, Menzics, b Hewlett 15 Collins, e Stewart, b Hewlett .... 5

ONE-SIDED. GASH MAKES 100. Holiday cricket was in store for the Whangarei cricketers : against Y.M.C.A. at Kensington Park. : In the Y.M.C.A, first innings Stevenson and Gash finished the side off in 12 overs, the total being 17, one of the lowest recorded in Whangarei cricket for some time. In fact, only 11 were scored off the bat. • A different tale was told when Jennings and Gash opened Whangarei’s first innings. The batsmen wore down Doel and Mackey and swiped the slacker bowlers at will. Ninety-nine were on the board before the first wicket fell, Jennings being caught by Mackey, of Auckland Training College, who .assisted Y.M.C.A. Gash 'wont on to complete his century, the first to be scored locally this season, before retiring. He hit seven fours, six sixes, and gave few chances. With the game in such a one-sided position, the later Whangarei batsmen mostly threw their wickets away with careless strokes. The total reached 182. Whangarei were keen for a threepointer, and Baigent was the only change bowler used when Y.M.C.A. had their second strike. Except for some solid batting by Danes and two boundaries by G. Wilson, the Y.M.C.A. batsmen might practically have not bothered to pad up, ’ The scores -were: Y.M.C.A. , First Innings.
