NIGHT BOWLING

INITIAL TOURNEYS

Night bowling for the 1928-29 season | was initiated on the Wihangarei -Club’s green last evening, when a full rink tourney was played. There was a splendid muster of trundlers, ineluding strong contingents Loin the HikurangT, Kensington and Portland clubs. The green was in good order, but several light showers, which fell during the progress of play, took off a lot ot‘ keenness. Prior to asking Mrs King to “switch on the light,” the president, Mr M. G. King, welcomed the visitors. He trusted that they would have a godd game and exhorted all to made use of the opportunity for night play to a greater extent than hitherto. Mrs King then. pulled down the switches, to the accompaniment of hearty applause, and the president sent up the jack. At a suitable adjournment a very line supper was served in the pavilion.

Great interest -centred in the third round game between teams skipped by J. Courtney and W. C. Conte. Ha/l the former emerged victorious he would have .won the tourney outright with the possible number -of wins, but a very keen contest resulted, and, with one head to go, the scores .-tood at eleven all. Some excellent bowling was witnessed on the final head, ami “the -gallery,” numbering about 60, was kept on its toes. Coote’s men eventually secured the verdict by 2 points.
