WHANGAREI REGATTA
GRATIFYING PROSPECTS
The prospects for the forthcoming Whangarei iHarbour Regatta, to be held at Onerahi on New Year's Bay, aro exceedingly bright, entries in most events promising to eclipse all previous records.
The association's energetic secretary, Mr C. D. Moloney, returned from Auckland during the week-end, after inter viewing officials of the various rowing and cruising clubs in the city with a view to soliciting outside representation for the, local fixture. His mission was by no means fruitless, all clubs being keen to participate. The following entries . have been guaranteed:—'North Shore Rowing Club 4, Auckland Club 7, West End 5, Waitemata 7 and St. George 8. To date nothing'' definite has been arranged with the Hamilton and Ngainawahia clubs, but entries arc assured from both.
It is confidently anticipated that at least eight clubs will be represented in the rawing events, this total being most encouraging to all concerned. The Auckland Club requested the secretary to make a special feature of the popular outboard motor racing, and he assured them that every effort would be made to further the interest of this branch of aquatic sport.
The committee will meet tomorrow night to discuss this and other matters concerning the regatta. /Mr Moloney also interviewed Auckland sailing officials, who assured him of , big entries for the centre-board yacht races, for both the local and v 7 % the ocean race from Bussell.
Other appreciable arrangements were made concerning the boat and train services to and from the regatta. The Northern Steamship Company has promised to run a special timetable with the s.s. Clansman, which will leave Auckland at 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve returning to Auckland at 8 p.m. on January 3, af, specially reduced fares of 27s 6d return.
The Railway Department will also play a helpful part in running trains to and from the regatta. For the convenience of patrons, trains will leave the old station siding instead of being despatched from the regular platform. This arrangement will .be much appreciated, was it will eliminate the long walk to the station.
With such strong competition promised from outside dabs, Whangarei aquatic enthusiasts should welcome the fact and will no doubt make a bold bid for supremacy in most events.
