\ At thfc monthly meeting on Wednesday, the Finance report contained the following interesting items: Accounntg paid at last meeting, £677; accounts paid since last meeting, £ll2l. Bank interest fox six months ending September 30 amoqpted to only 4s, w;hile interest on fixed deposit for the same period amounted to £43 15s. Loan Fund showed accounts paid at last meeting, £lO4 19a, and cr. balance at date, £1976. The balances bn loan accounts are as follows: Ruawai £SOOO (fully lifted), in credit £287; Ma- , chinery Loan (fully lifted), in debit £22; Mareretu £SOOO (fully lifted), in .credit £2160; Toka Toka £SOOO (£2OOO uplifted), ip credit £333; Mapau £4750 (fully lifted), in credit £310; Jfomiti Special Bating Area (£IOOO unlifted), in credit £696; Paparoa £3380 (fully lifted), ip credit £46; Whakapira/u £3300 (fully lifted), in credit £l4; Bridge Loan No. 2 £3350 (£1350 unlifted), in debit £249; Wairau £4SQO (fully lifted), in credit £6. Re Kaiwaka-Oneriri Road. —Completed plan signed by Mr Linnell was received for Council’s signature. Main J Highways Board wrote advising that it was unable to declare the Marohemo to Linton’s Road a main high ; way, but would reconsider the matter next year. North Auckland Progress League advised that it had decided to go into recess owing to lack of support from local bodies. Nuisance to settlers at Taipuha by pollution of streams from flaxmill was reported on, and it was resolved to notify the owner that if the nuisance is not abated forthwith, the council will take action under the Hcaßb Act, as it was not .satisfied with steps so far taken. Tin engineer reported the arrival of tin grader with an expert for instruction work. Trials have boon satisfactory in rounding off shoulders and scarifying. Slight alterations are being carried out to the machine before the council takes it over. Work on the Ruawai section of the RuawaiMaungaturoto main highway will be completed in about a week. Leave of absence has been granted to the assistant engineer for his wedding. All R.S. joists for bridge contracts arc to Rand from J. Burns and Go., and the timber is expected at an early date, when Messrs Gwyn and Sou will make a start with Dunn’s Road bridges. Re Dodd’s roads, Maungaturoto, inspecr tion has been made and trial grades '•"of two routes will be made as soon as 1 possible. Re Main Highway, Dargaville to Maungaturoto (section Ruawai to iPapavoa), the clerk reported having, in conjunction with Messrs Hamcs and Holmes (Ruawai), interviewed the Main Highways Board in Wellington in connection with this road, when it was arranged that the county engineer prepare an estimate of the cost of reconstructing the highway and submit' same to the board. Ho explained that the Ruawai, Dairy Company was desirous of consigning its butter by rail from Paparoa instead of by steamer and rail from Ruawai. via Helcnsville,

and to enable them to dl) so economically, it was essential that the road

should he (considerably strengthened in order to allow a laden weight of four tons to ihe carried instead of 21 tons as at present. A petition containing over 600 signatures was presented to the Prime Minister asking for assistance from the Main Highways Board towards constructing the road. A conference is being held at Ruawai on Monday next between Hobson and Otamatea County delegates for the purpose of arriving at a uniform policy in connection with this highway.

Completion of work on Ruawai section of Ruawai —Maungaturoto Main Highway may be expected in about a week.
