- Dr. J. J. North referred to .the, re* cent disturbance at the Elleralie Racecourse, Auckland, when seconding a resolution against gambling, at tho Baptist Union’s Conference.
“I live close .to the Elleralie 'race? course,” Dr North said, ‘‘lt is a perfect little paradise, but ‘-tjhe other afternoon it was turned into a perfect hell.” (He remarked that a race was never fair. People were being quietly “had” by all sorts of folk. “Tho other afternoon they got a sudden •eye-opener. It'Was a wonder they did not pull Ihc pavilion down in their .anger, . ■ ■ - ■ ■
“Why do ;they got so angry?” Dr North asked. The worst passions,-most , devastating passions, were there. Ho considered the Elleralie race meeting was God-sent, because it held up .the glass and let the people see what was going on.
