I (From Our Own Correspondent.) | WELFARE LEAGUE. I The monthly meeting of the Management Committee -was held in the j Portland Hall on Monday night, Mr A. !C. Whitham presiding. Others present jwero: Messrs H. Penning, W. Wallbank, F. Boyd, E. Perry, C. Just, H. jßland, D. Rodgers, A. Magee, F. Can't non and E. Hay (secretary). Apolojgies were received from Messrs J. Fer(gusou and J. Newton. n CORRESPONDENCE. ! The Portland Cricket Club wrote j offering an enlarged photo of last ■ team (winners of Wilding..Whimp Shield), to be hung in the hall. The offer was accepted with thanks. The Croquet Club made application .for loan of some extra erockery ; etc., for their opening day. The application , was granted. The Bowling Club was granted use of the pavilion and crockery subject to the usual conditions.

The ro- | port also dealt with the following mat- | tors: I Gymnasium.—Mr Magee reported that classes wore being carried on as I usual. i Grounds.—Mr Just intimated that the greenkeeper had the croquet lawn in good order, it now being in condi- ' tion for play . It -was decided to have grass cut around the cricket pitch. Library.—Mr Bland reported th'at some new books had been purchased, ’ and the comniittee were haying the sets of “Beautiful Britain” bound. Accounts totalling £67 17s 3d .were passed for payment. ! SUMMER SPORTS. / The various clubs are showing activity. The Tennis Club are having repairs done to the courts, and the present' pavilion enlarged. The official opening of the courts is fixed for Saturday next, 13-th October. Cricket.—Members are now getting down to practice. A working bee was held to improve the playing, area around the pitch. The “colts” of the club are showing good promise. Croquet Chib. —The now lawns laid) down by the Welfare League are in good playing order, and should be well ~patronised during the coming season. The- opening takes place on Saturday, 20th October.
Bowling 'Club.—Tile bowling green looks in much bettor condition than iii former years. Several now .members are joining, artd a good season is expected.
A pavilion'is being erected, and will be ready for the opening on OcoberSO. The club has secured the following dates for tournaments: ■November .15 and .17, half-day tournament; December 2D and .11, fullrink tournament (2 full days); March 7 and 9, 1929, half-day tournament.
