VISCOUNT HALDANE DEAD
DISTINGUISHED STATESMAN, (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 11.20 a.m.) LONDON, August 19. The death took place today of Viscount Haldane, in his 73rd year. HARSH TREATMENT. SPLENDID SERVICE HONORED. (Australian Press Association.) (Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 19. Mr Lloyd George, referring to Viscount Haldane, said: “I always thought he was most harshly treated in war time and accorded the basest ingratitude. No British statesman more greatly ensured Allied success. He organised the Territorials who saved us during the dark winter of 1915, when we had no other troops. He organised the General Staff and Expeditionary Force and initiated the Officers’ Cadet Corps, yet he was treated as if a traitor to his native land. It hurt him deeply at times.”
