ALLEGED SLANDER

STEONG EEMAEES BY JUDGE

CEIMINAL PROCEEDINGS LIKELY,

(Per Preas Association—Copyright.) DUNEDIN, This Day. In the Supreme Court, Thomas Henry Brown claimed £SOO from George Augustus Herbert for alleged slander, based on an alleged statement made by defendant, that plaintiff had the speedometer of his motor car wound back 5000 miles before selling it, thereby involving himself in a 'conspiracy to defraud. Plaintiff denied having tampered with the meter, or instructing anyone else to do so, while defendant maintained that his words were true and that the meter was actually’ wound back.

Mr Justice Ostler accepted the evidence of the plaintiff as true, he having proved that the speedometer was not wound back. Defendant had made an impudent and daring attempt to defeat the course of justice. The Judge directed the 'Registrar to impound all exhibits and said he would consider whether he would recommend the police to investigate with a view to criminal proceedings.
