SMITH OUTPOINTS GRIME VERDICT UNPOPULAR. j (Australian Prea« Association.) (Received 8.50 am.) NEW, YORK, August 18. At Bridgeport, Connecticut, tonight, /Smith, 9st lilb, defeated Grime, Pst 21b, on points. In the first round Grime staggered the veteran Smith with a series of rights to the chin. The second round Grime took easily with left hooks and elusive dodging, employing a long left and a short right. In the third round Grime won applause from the crowd by nearly out-boxing Smith. In the fourth round Smith got under Grime’s open defence and drove him about the ring with rights and lofts to the face. In the fifth round Grime’s defence failed. Smith opened a cut over the Australian’s right eye with a flicking left. The sixth round was even. In die seventh round Grime floored Smith brieflly with a right. The eighth and ninth rounds were even, Grime outboxing Smith, but the latter landing enough blows to even the score. In the tenth Smith, out-punching Grime, won the round and the judge’s decision, which was unpopular with the crowd and newspapermen present. Grime, however, showed need of further practice and the accomplishment of more effective defence tactics. Tho fight was fast and bloodless and very nearly even, with the consensus of opinion apparently favouring Grime.
