WOMAN’S EXPERIENCE SHOP FRONTS COLLAPSE SYDNEY, This Day. A remarkable escape from death was the experience of Mrs Florence Martin, of 144 King Street, St. Peter’s, when the front portion of two shops in the process of demolition collapsed on her a few doors from her home. Fortunately the windows had been previously taken away, or Mrs Martin would have undoubtedly been killed. The wind was blowing at gale strength at the time, and rain was falling in torrents. Pedestrians on the other side of the road heard the resounding crash, and saw the bricks thrown far out into the street, across the tramline, but for some seconds did not realise that someone was beneath the heap of debris. Willing hands hastily extricated the unfortunate woman, and the Newtown-Marrickville Ambulance was notified. Within a few minutes the ambulance had convoyed her to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, whore she was treated for concussion, injuries to the face and right shoulder and left knee, and shock. On the previous day Mrs Martin’s shop window was broken by falling material from the same buildings. It is presumed that the wind loosened the brickwork, and was responsible for the collapse. I
