TASMANIA’S PLIGHT
LACK OF PASSENGER SERVICE. IMMEDIATE ACTION URGED. HOBART, This Day. Business people of Hobart are alarmed at the continued cessation of the passenger services between Hobart and the mainland ports. The Premier (Mr J. C. McPhee) has been asked by the Hobart Chamber of Commerce to bring the matter before Mr Bruce and to urge the Government to give effect to the widespread demand both from Tasmania and the mainland for the repeal of the coastal clauses of the Navigation Act. It is pointed out that Sir George Pearce recently stated in the Senate that the Government was giving the matter consideration from every point of view, and that the Navigation Department wag inquiring into what would be the effect on other parts of Australia if the coastal clauses were- repealed. It is urged that the continued delay in restoring passenger communication between Hobart and the mainland while inquiries are being made, is having a most damaging effect on trade. The announcement that the E. and A. steamer Tanda had been granted exemption to carry passengers from Hobart to Sydney was received with approval. Forty applications for berths have been made. It is expected that all available berths will be occupied when the vessel leaves Hobart on July 7.
