DISTRESSING FATALITY
MAYOR OF WAIPAWA KILLED. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) WAIPAWA, This Day. The Mayor, Mr H. M. Rathbone, was the victim of a motor accident last evening and died this morning without recovering consciousness. Ho w r as crossing the road on his
way home when a motor lorry, driven by W. F, Stanley, knocked him down causing a fracture of the base of the skull and other injuries. Deceased was 58 years of age and leaves a widow and four of a grownup family. He had been prominently identified with the public life of the community for the past 30 years and had served seven years as mayor.
Romo more .juggling tricks were done with figures by Jlr D. AlcDougall, the Mayor of Gore, when he told of two Scottish women who decided to sell their fowls and share the profits. Accordingly, each set out with 30 to the marker. The, first was able to sell them at two for Is (this was in the happy days of long ago), but the second had to part with three for Is. When they met to share the profits, which of course amounted to 255, they found themselves unable to agree on the division and so they went together to the local, arbiter. After deep cogitation, he evolved this reasoning: “Three for Is and two for Is works out at five for 2s, doesn’t it? There fore (10 hens at five for 2s would bring, in 245. I shall keep the Is which is obviously the cause of the trouble and must have been unfairly gained, and you will have 12s each.’’ Everyone, arbiter and women alike, were pleased with the wise judgment.
