OTONGA NORTHWARDS
GOVERNMENT ROAD DECLARED
£5 TO £1 BASIS.
Advice has been received by the District Council of the Main Highways Board that the length of road from Otonga to the Whangarei County boundary has been declared a Government road on a £5 for £1 basis, and the Highways Board has agreed to that subsidy. Writing to the meeting of the Whangarei County Council today, Mr J. MeEnnis, . chairman of the District Council, stated that .the Anal scheme to connect up the metalling without any extensive deviations was estimated to cost £21,200 Ss, to which had to be added provision for another flood opening, north of *Whakapdra Bridge. This, with approach embankments and about three-quarters of a mile to connect up with Waiariki Flat, would cost £2450, making the total cost of the whole section £23,656 8s. 1 The major scheme to include additional work later on to raise all lengths around Hukerenui above flood level, was estimated to cost £20,057 Bs.
At the meeting of the eounei! this afternoon, Cr. F. Elliott, when congratulating Mr Webb upon his reelection as chairman, expressed his satisfaction at receipt of the news. The notoriously bad road had been a sore point with him for some time. Ho had been battling over the matter for a long time and had had to put up with a lot ,of criticism. However, he was glad to hear that there was likelihood of important -work being done on the road in the near future.
