LEFT LAMENTING

GERMAN NATIONALISTS . ELECTION DEBACLE. PRONOUNCED RED MENACE. (Australian Press Association.) (Received 8.15 a.m.) LONDON, May 22. Berlin messages say it is stated semi-officially that Cabinet intends

to postpone its resignation until the Reichstag meets about June. 12. The Nationalists are aghast at their collapse and arc lamenting the bourgeois disunion. It is realised that the election result represents a pronounced swing to the Left, but there is equal disunity among the Labourites and Communists, being sworn enemies of the Socialist “traitors.” The increase in the Communist vote is most disquieting, no fewer than 3,200,000 electors proclaiming obedience to Moscow.

Tim Berlin correspondent of the “Morning Post” states? “It is indeed fortunate that the Socialists are not strong enough to form a coalition without'the .People’s Party, as they might have been unable to re'sist the replacement of Dr Stresemann. The only possible majority seems to bo a grand coalition consisting of the People's Party, the Centre Democrats and the Socialists.”

REPLICA OF 1920

DESTRUCTIVE TACTICS,

(Australian Press Association.) (Received 10,25 a.m.) PARIS, May 22

Commenting on the. German elections, “Le Petit Pa mien” thinks that, in spite of the sot-haek to Dr Stresemann’s People’s Party, the results constitute a victory for the policy of Franco-German rapprochement. The journal concludes that Dr Stresemann is the real victor, also that the internal policy of the Reich will become more difficult , and complicated.

“L’Eeho de Paris” forecasts that the first action of the Socialists will be to demand evacuation of the, Rhineland, adding: “The Reichstag just elected is no novelty; it is merely a reproduction of the Assembly; of 1920, which directed f the whole campaign for destruction of the Versailles Treaty.”
