ARTIFICIAL LEG DAMAGED
(Special to “Northern Advocate”) AUCKLAND. This Dav.
On his way to enjoy a morning swim at the Parnell baths yesterday, the former Governor of South Australia, General Sir Tom Bridges, had a narrow escape from a serious accident. Workmen were engaged in removing the old pay office, which is on the lauding near the bottom of the long flight of steps, which lead from the reserve at the foot of St. Stephen’s Avenue to the baths. A couple of steps, immediately above the landing, had evidently become loosened. Unknowingly the General stepped on them. They gave way beneath him, and had he not grasped suddenly at the hand-rail he would have fallen about 20 feet to the ground beneath. General Bridges was quickly hauled up, when it was found his artificial leg, a result of war injury, was badly damaged by the fall, so much so that he could not walk on it. However, Sir Tom did not let the accident deter him from his morning dip.
