BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION.
Our Maungatapere correspondent writes:
A notable event took place at Kokopu on Saturday evening, when Mr and Mrs Paul Kokich gave a coming-of-age dance in honour of their elder daughter, Miss Phyllis, and it was a striking tribute to the popularity of the young lady and her parents, to find that upwards of 200 guests accepted the invitation to attend. Many came from Whangarei and the surrounding districts, some from as far afield as Waipu. The accommodation in the large bam, which had been cleared and gaily and tastefully decorated for the occasion, was taxed to the utmost. All present set out to enjoy themselves thoroughly, and in this they certainly succeeded, the gathering being one of the most joyous the writer has been privileged to attend. In spite of the warm evening, dancing went with a swing, reminiscent of old fashioned unconventional days. A pleasing feature was the delightful rendering of old Scottish songs by Mrs Ferguson, a recent arrival from the Homeland, and we all hope to have further opportunity to enjoy this lady’s vocal accomplishments.
A sumptuous repast was done full justice to, after which felicitations were tendered to Miss Kokich and her parents, to the accompaniment of musical honours, and hearty cheering that nearly lifted the roof off the barn.
Many useful and valuable presents gave testimony to the affection and esteem in which the young lady is held by a host of friends. The three-tier birthday cake being cut in the orthodox manner, and served round, we all reluctantly took our departure, hoping again some day to be priviliged to foregather at the Kokopu homestead and participate in that notable and warm-hearted hospitality.
