March 1, 3. —Marlborough R.C. Summer. NATIVE CHIEF GOES WELL. • A SMART HALF MILE. (Special to “Northern Advocate.*') CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. j At Addington yesterday a large j number of spectators vent out to see Native Chief work. He was walked round once, and then Kcnnerley set him to work from the two-mile post, but he came to the mark at a break, and had to be pulled up. He did not go away too well the second time, but he went to the furlong post in 15s, the quarter peg was reached in 29 1-osec, and he reached the winning post, which was half a mile in 59 l-ss. As that was all liis driver intended to do, Native Chief was eased up but he went the next half-mile in 1.8, and the mile in 2.7 1-5. *
Jogging apparently at about half speed over the rest of the journey, Native Chief did the mile and a quarter in 2.49. He went the first six furlongs in 1,32 3-5. As Native Chief was only out to work half a mile, no notice need be taken of the other part of his work, except to show the great speed lie possesses, Tlte match with Great Bingen at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday is creating intense interest in trotting and sporting circles generally.
