WELLINGTON, This Day,
A joint statement, issued today by the Wellington Trades and Labour Council and the Alliance of Labour, reviews the question of unemployment in the Dominion and urges the Government and local bodies to take steps to organise an adequate scheme to meet the difficulty, which, it is alleged, is still present, even at the busiest period of the yea. The statement says:
"A deputation was artapged from the Wellington Trades and Labour Council to meet the Government, but the council is still waiting the Government’s pleasure to place before it the present state of Unemployment.” —(Press Assn.
POSITION IN THE NORTH.
OFFICER INVESTIGATING.
COMPREHENSIVE REGISTRATION WANTED.
(Special to ‘‘Northern Advocate.”) „ ' AUCKLAND, This Day.
An investigation of the unemployment situation in Auckland is being made by Mr T. R. Aickin, an officer of the Prime Minister’s Department. He will report to the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates direct as to the result of his inquiries and, meanwhile, can make no statement for publication. Mr Adckiu remarked, last evening, on the difficulty of accurately gauging the extent of unemployment. Social workers and secretaries of Labour Unions .gave varying estimates of the gravity of the problem. It was necessary for his purpose, however, to make the closest possible computation of those requiring work. It would help his investigation very much if all unemployed would register with the labour Department. That was one of its functions and if every man seeking a job were listed there, the Government would have before it a complete statement and would be able to take measures accordingly’. ' Many men did not trouble to register with the Department, but only with the secretary of their unions. .Mr Aickin suggested, however, that social workers and union secretaries should urge on every unemployed man to register with the Department. There could then be no doubt as to duplications and the list would provide the surest data as to the extent of the problem. Such a complete, return was a first essential when considering measures of relief.
