GREAT BINGEN V. NATIVE CHIEF. NEXT SATURDAY’S CONTEST. The much-discussed speed contest between Great Bingen and Native Chief over a mile will be decided a Addington on Saturday next, and it goes without saying that the meeting of the champion sprinters will form the star attraction of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting. The records show that Groat Bingen has gone a mile on one occasion in 2.4 4-5, and on another occasion 2.7 3-5, while the best down to the credit of Native Chief is 2.8 2-5. In view of these records, the match would appear to be a good thing for Mr McKenzie’s horse, but it may turn out that Native Chief is the better of the pair, and that from a flying start he will be too brilliant for Great Bingen. There is no question about Native Chief being on,e of the fastest, if not actually the fastest, pacers ever raced in the Dominion, but he has been an erratic customer from a. standing start, otherwise he would long since have enrolled himself with the most brilliant milers. It has been claimed for him that he is the nearest approach to* a two-minute horse New Zealand has produced, and Ids friends claim that ho will come home the last half of his test w T ih Great Bingen in a minute, if not better. This is claiming something really great, and is something that no pacer has yet accomplished in public. The fact of the test being from a moving start should ensure both horses going right, and •whatever the result may be the eight furlongs will be trampled down in brilliant time if the track conditions are favourable.

On Saturday last Native Chief was responsible for an exceptional wOrk at Addington. He passed the first halfmile in 58s, and the second half in 1.4, making 2.2 for the mile. .This was the fastest mile over registered at Addington, and the horse pulled up well.
