ADVENTUROUS YOUTHS

RISKY CANOE VOYAGE

DOWN SHOALHAVEN RIVER.

SYDNEY, This Day,

Two Goulburn youths, Max Gray and Arthur Lee Hunt, have just completed a 150 miles canoe voyage down the Shoalhaveu River, from Oallen Ford, near Goulburn, to the sea beyond Nowra. The trip occupied 26 days, and on two occasions the lads had to turn back to previous stopping places to obtain food supplies. Repeated attempts have been made in previous years to complete the trip, but all have failed.

For the first part of the journey the river runs through deep gorges, the precipitous sides being a thousand feet high, while the way is so rough and rocky that portages are frequently necessary. For some time Gray and Hunt covered only three miles a day. Falls, rapids, and even whirlpools were met with, and severely tried the specially constructed canoe.

Near Terriga, a bautiful waterfall was discovered. It is 300 feet high, and a great stream was pouring over it, presenting a magnificent spectacle. The river teemed with fish. In several of the gorges washings of the gravel were taken,, and in nearly every instance traces of gold were found There was ample game in sight, but the country so rough as to be impenetrable, so that it is not likely to become a hunter's paradise. The youths who made the trip are members of two of the oldest families in the Goulburn district. The canoe was built by Kemp’s, Sydney, and ■weighed half a ewt.
