AQUATIC CARNIVAL
AT PORTLAND,
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
The first water carnival took place on Saturday in ideal weather conditions. The. programme arranged by the committee proved a most enjoyable one, and it is hoped the function will become an annual one, A first-class musical programme was rendered by the Portland Brass Band under the baton of Mr E. Dunstan. The selections were greatly appreciated by the large crowd. The committee are indebted to 'Messrs W. Spratt and P. Mason, of Onerahi, for their services and loan of barges.
The following were, the officials.:— Starters and handieappers, Messrs R. Richards and W. Wallbank;. judges, Messrs J. Ferguson, C. Oram and C. Cannon? stewards, Messrs W, Nelson and A. J. Magee.
SWIMMING EVENTS.
50 Yards (Schoolboys).—W, Ross 1, F. Lorimer 2. The boys w r ere well handicapped, only one yard separating the first three.
25 Yards (Sclioolgirls). Myra Lorimer 1, M. Thackeray 2, The placing in this event would have been different if Miss Bland, who led to the barge, had only thought of reaching out to touch. 50 Yards Free Style (Ladies). — Miss P. Bereich 1, Miss M. Williams 2. The winner's handicap proved to be too much for the other competitors; she won an easy race. 50 Yards Free Style (men),—F. Gillespie and L. Atkinson, equal, 1; ,T. Cotter and G. Sutcliffe, equal, 2. This was the star event of the afternoon. There were 12 starters. The finish proved most exciting, all the competitors being in a bunch.
DIVING,
Long Diving (schoolboys).—F. Lorimer 1, A, McLennan and D. Ferguson, equal, 2. Considering the lack of opportunity for practice, the diving was good.
Long Diving (schoolgirls).—Myra Lorimer 1, P. Bereich 2, Again, in this event, only practice is required. Neat Diving (ladies). —Miss M s Cotter 1, Miss Evans and Mrs Forrester, equal, 2, The winner was very consistent and neat.
& . Neat Diving . (men). —F. Gillespie 1, J. Cotter 2. There was a large entry for this event. The judges had a hard task to sort out the prize-getters.
NOVELTY EVENTS. Beach Beauty Competition.—Miss N. Cook 1, Miss M. Cotter and Miss M. Forbes, equal, 2. The competition was most attractive. The winner was the only competitor who had not succumbed to .fashion by having her tresses shorn.
Mop Fighting in Dinghies.—|E. Atkinson. This caused a great deal of amusement. The finalists put up a great fight. Dinghy Race (half mile handicap). —J. Wallace 1, G. Wallace 2, The race was rowed up the little channel with the tide, starting from Mr Mason’s launch half a mile away. The distance w T as a little too short for the scratch men, who were unable to catch the limit men. Won by one and a half lengths. A length separated second and third. There were seven starters. The prizes were presented by Mr T. H. Wilson at the interval during the picture entertainment on Saturday evening.
