KNOCKED DOWN BY CAE. (Per Press Assn.) GISBORNE, This Day. The inquest was held yesterday concerning the death of Edna Third, aged eight years, and Faith Third, aged five vears, who were knocked down by a car while crossing the road to attend the Awapuni School on Wednes- < dav, the elder girl being killed instantly and the younger dying in hos- ; pital. The children were- standing on the : footpath as a rubbish dray came by, and when it had passed they stepped out behind it and ran across the road, being knocked down by a car proceeding in the opposite direction. I The evidence of the driver of the car, a Maori, named Tom Dennis, was to the effect that, on turning into the road from tile country, he slackened down to 22 miles an hour, but on nearing the school, he slowed down still further to about 15 miles. Seeing a dray approach, the road not being very wide at that point, he sounded his horn and swerved slightly to the left, to pass the dray. About eight yards from the dray,- two children, hand in hand, commenced to run across the road to the school ground. About 1 half way across, they hesitated and then ran on. Witness jammed all brakes on hard and slewed to the left, running on to the grass by the roadside, which by now the children had reached. The girls were struck by the left front .of the ear, and knocked down. The coroner, Mr E. C. Levy, S.M., said he would decline to comment on the spool of the car or as to the driver’s method of progression, and returned a verdict that the death of the elder girl was due to serious injuries to the head and skull, while the death of the younger girl was due to i injuries, both oceuring through being struck by a car driven by T. Dennis. CYCLIST’S DEATH. COLLIDES WITH A DOG. INVERCARGILL, This Day.
