GAS POISONING CASE

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day,

In a dying- condition in a gas-iillcd room, Mrs May Marshall, aged 42, was found l>y her husband at her home in New Brighton.

She had been an inmate of an institution, from which she eseapedi last evening. Her husband searched | for her till midnight, but found no: trace of her till yesterday, when the husband wont back to his home and found his wife lying beside the gas ring. She was unconscious, and died despite the efforts of her husband and a doctor to revive her.

She left an unsigned note, saying that sh>e had entered the house by a window, and that she was dead beat and did not know what to do.

The death occurred at the Danncvirke Public Hospital early on Wednesday morning of William Perrin, aged 67 years, who had been an inmate of the institution for some months suffering from chronic bronchitis and asthma.

An inquest, hold into the circumstances, disclosed that Perrin had gone to Palmerston North, whore he said he had purchased .veronal pellets, eight of which he had taken in cocoa on Tuesday about 7 p.m., presumably for the purpose of inducing sleep. Ho died some hours later, A verdict was returned that death was duo to cardiac failure, following on pulmonary haemorrhage, accelerated by an overdose of veronal, self,administered, there being no evidence to show that it was taken for any other purpose than inducing sle ; ep.

- William Crook, aged 48, single, suffering from an incurable disease, cut his throat with a razor at the Wairau Hospital this - morning. Ho had 'been an inmate of the institution since July 27 last and had shown no suicidal tendencies previously.

At the inquest on William Conn.clly, aged 22, who was drowhed at the Khandallah swimming pool on Tuesday, the evidence showed that deceased, after bathing, returned to the water, saying he would swim across to the dressing room. A companion missed him after two or three minutes

and told the caretaker, who dived in and recovered the body,” Effects to restore breathing were fruitless. The Coroner said deceased might have had a heart attack, for had he got into difficulties ho would probably have attracted attention. On the other hand, there were some slight signs of death from drowning, and a. verdict to that effect would be returned.

CRASH AT INTERSECTION,

THREE MEN BADLY HURT.

A serious motor collision, involving severe injuries to James Turner, Jack Cooper and Reginald Cook, three employees of the Colonial Sales Co., Auckland, occurred at an intersection on the borough north boundary last night.

A small ear, driven by H. J. Thompson, was proceeding along the main street when Thompson observed another ear coming out of a. side road. He slowed up but the other vehicle careered across at j*reat speed, leaving a cloud of dust. -Simultaneously, a third ear, driven by A. Fonio, of Auckland, came from the direction in which tho second car had gone and crashed into the first ear, causing it to swung completely round. Thompson had a remarkable escape, but Forno’s car -went on about ,20 yards and then somersaulted, pinning the five occupants beneath. The three named w r ere found to be severely injured and were scut to hospital. Porno and Stanley Bolthousc escaped with minor bruises. Their ear was almost totally wrecked. —Press Assn.
