Francis Robert Bennett was charged at the Police Court with loitering at Devonport for the purpose'~of betting on January 28 and 30." The chief-detective said that Bennett was a bookmaker. Hq had no other occupation and had an office in Swanson Street, with no name on the door, which was barren inside. There was a telephone, the number of which was not listed. Witness produced a double chart which he said was published by Bennett. It had Bennett's sign: “Bumble Bee." The chart was picked up in the street and showed that Bennett had a £ISOO book on the Cup and Railway double at Christmas, Defendant was hanging about the gates of the Takapuna course on both raeq days and was visited by many well-known punters from the course.
Accused denied the charge and decision was reserved.—Press Assn.
