FRANCO—JUGOSLAVIAN PACT

ITALY PERTURBED. FRANCE’S INTENTIONS SUSPECTED. (Received 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, November 9, The news that France and Jugoslavia have reached the point of concluding a pact is perturbing Italy, where it is regarded as an unfriendly act towards Italy and conclusive evidence of France's anti-Italian intentions, but a Belgrade correspondent says that it is officially denied that it is directed at a third party. It is pointed out that the pact is merely an extension of the Locarno Treaty, and will contribute to Europe’s peace. Moreover Britain has expressed the greatest pleasure in the negotiations.

The French minister issued a statement which emphasises that practically no changes have occurred in Jugo— Franco relations. The pact constitutes a solemn manifestation of friendship and ia common desire for peace.— Times.

ITALIAN PRESS HOSTILE.

ROME, November 9,

Most newspapers, hostilely criticise the Franco —Jugoslav treaty as an unfriendly act and remind France that Rome cannot be ignored as the seat of Balkan equilibrium.—A., and N.Z.,
