ASSOCIATION MEETING.

A meeting of the A. and P. Association was held recently. It was decided to call tenders for the position of caretaker, owing to a vacancy caused by the resignation of the previous holder.

Several tenders were received for tarring the yards, but they were held over till the next meeting.

The canvassing for donations and advertisements was left to Messrs E. S. Ralls, V. Taylor and R. Brigham, The secretary explained that several settlers had spoken to him regarding the metalling of the main road, explaining that the Highways Board did not intend doing the work this summer. After some discussion it was decided to call a meeting of ratepayers to discuss the situation. FOOTBALL DANCE. A dance held by the Football Club was well attended, in spite of the bad roads, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Mr J. Thorburn provided excellent music, assisted with extras by Miss L. Allan and Mr J. Peters. Mr J. Clark ably carried out the duties of M.C. At midnight a bountiful supper was handed round. Dancing terminated at 2 a.m. RATEPAYERS MEETING. On Monday last a well attended meeting of ratepayers was held in the Towai Hall. Mr A. Dawson was elected chairman and Mr E. Brigham secretary to the meeting.

Mr Dawson briefly explained that the meeting was called to discuss the metalling of the main road in the TowaiMaroViaku district, the formation of a telephone exchange at Towai, and the customs tax.

After considerable discussion Mr W. Wallace moved, seconded by Mr J. Keogh, that Messrs Dawson, Ralls and Brigham be appointed to draw up a letter protesting against the decision of the Highways Board, and asking that the road be metalled this summer, a copy of the letter to be sent to the Minister of Public Works, Mr Allen Bell, M.P., the Auckland Automobile Association,’ the Bay of Islands County Council and the •Commercial Travellers’ Association, asking for their support.

Mr Dawson then brought up the matter of protection on British goods, and, on the motion of Mr J. Keogh, seconded by Mr A. Dawson, it was decided that the secretary write to the Minister of Customs protesting on behalf of the meeting against the protection on British goods. Mr Ralls stated that he had made inquiries regarding a telephone exchange at Towai, and had found that the department would make an investigation if a petition signed by thirty people were forwarded. He submitted a petition, which was approved and signed by those present. The meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to the chair. ASSOCIATION DANCE, The monthly dance of the A. and P. Association was held on September 14. There was a very good attendance; in fact, more turned out than have done for some time. This was probably due to the fine night and the improved roads.

The music was voluntarily provided by Mrs B. Hauraki, Misses L. Allan, G. Barnes, M. O’Neil, E. Collier and Mr J. Peters. The association is indebted to all the helpers for their fine efforts. At. midnight, supper, which was provided by the Towai ladies, was handed round by the ladies’ committee and was appreciated by all.

The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr R. Brigham, who made a short speech during the evening on behalf of the ladies’ committee. He thanked those ladies and gentlemen who had so generously provided music and stated that they had helped the funds considerably. He hoped they would be kind enough to come along again.
