BOAT-BUILDER'S SLIP
j MR W. BROPHY’S REQUEST. A meeting of a committee comprising Mr J. A. Finlayson, chairman, and Messrs J. E. Holmes and J. D. McKenzie, and attended by Mr* W. Brophy and Mr W. M. Fraser, the board’s engineer, took place recently to consider Mr Brophy’s application for a site on the waterfront for 1 a boat-building yard. Mr Brophy . had stated that,, since Victoria Bridge had been closed to vessels carrying masts, his business had been reduced to the building and repairing of small craft only, and he desired to remove to some other site where he could Jay down a slipway capable of carrying scows. On being' questioned in the matter, Mr Brophy said he had no particular site in mind, but would be guided by any suggestion the board had to make. Several localities, which would be available for tky purpose were then mentioned by the committee, as was also the hiring of one or more of the board’s new slipways, but none of these proposals appeared to suit the applicant’s requirements. After an assurance was given .to Mr Brophy that the board was prepared to assist him in any reasonable way, he was advised to inspect the' whole waterfront, and, having selected a site, to consult in the matter with the board’s engineer and then to submit to the board a definite proposal for the leasing of any such area. It was shown that the board had given Mr Brophy an opportunity to suggest a suitable site, but he had not done so. Meanwhile he was making use of the board’s slip. Consequently the matter remains in abeyance.
