REMARKABLE AMERICAN FIGURES. They do not lose much time in laying concrete pavements in the United States. According to the July issue of “Roads and. Streets” one of the fastest records to date was established on June 2 at Thomasville, Ga., when a crew working on a. 9-hour day put down a total of 3832 square yards of Jin. concrete base with a single paver. Converted into terms of standard 18ft. highway Gin. thick, this is building road at the rate of 141 ft per hour, or 2.35 feet, per minute. Another remarkable record in which a single crew built 1515 ft, of standard Bates type 20ft. pavement between sunrise and sunset was established on May U on the La Porte Highway out of Houston, Texas, when a crew of the Tibbetts Construction Co., kept at it steadily for 14 hours and 13 minutes. The pavement laid was 20ft, wide and,Gin. thick. Translated into terms of standard 18ft. highway Gin. thick this would be building standard pavement at the rate of 128 ft. per hour or 2.13 ft. per minute. This crew has been consistently building pavement at a high rate, having built more than 1300 ft. per day four times within a month. This highway is 36ft wide, and is being paved with an 1 lin. slab which is laid half at a time. Using a single paver, this, crew has been consistently building more than 500 ft, of 18ft. slab, Hin. thick, per day.
