NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Spotter.”) Banjuke put up a creditable performance at Marton yesterday by toting 12.2 in the mud over three miles and getting second money. The son of Bisogue is only six years old and will be a good one to keep in mind. The going at Marton yesterday was exceptionally heavjg judging by the times recorded. Most of those first past tlie post, came from tin 1 lightweight divisions and the public must have been in fair picking form as very few neglected' ones paid a “divvy.”

Blimp, the winner of the Trial Plate at Marton yesterday is a three-year-old' gelding by Gasbag—Marfaux. His only start last season was in the Clovorlea Nursery at Manawatit when he ran unplaced. Yesterday was his first start this season and he accounted for quite a useful field in a somewhat easy manner. It looks as though he is going to turn out a smart one.

Peohwa (Hliad's hero*—Sensation mare) sported silk successfully in his first start this season by annexing the Hack Hurdles at Marton yesterday. In his 12 starts last season he scored one first, four seconds and two thirds. Jovial, who ran second to Peshwa, looks like securing the thick end of a purse in the near future.

You were disappointed last year because you did not preserve sufficient eggs with SHARLAND’S EGG PRESERVATIVE, Don't, make the same mistake again, but put down more this Season, 4

Closefire lias been knocking at the door for quite a while, and the daughter- of Campfire was not allowed to pay too big a price in the Spring Handicap at Marton yesterday. Boy, who acted as runner-up, is from that smart mare Lady Louisa, and gives promise of being very useful over a middle distance. He won a nine furlong hack event at Hawke’s Bay in June.

Royal Mint is one of the Catmint tribe who revel in the heavy going, and It is win in the Handicap at Marton was not surprising. A big section of the public must have favoured his chance as he was installed third favourite. The son of Folly Perkins headed off an .honest performer in Nukumai from whom he was in receipt of 2 till).

Handy’s chances in the ►Steeplechase at Marten were considered second to the top weight, Banjulce, and his handicap of 321 b came in “ handy” at the business end.

The three-year-old filly, Miss Mercia, about whose breeding there is some doubt, and of whom on a former occasion big things were expected, retrieved her lost laurels by winning the Electric Hack at . Marton yesterday. Being fifth in order of favouritism in a nine-horse field, she would return her supporters a good price. Volplane, the four-year-old colt by Warplane —Sinapis, was runner-up in the Electric Handicap and his chance on the machine ranked in the order of seventh. As his dam was a N.Z. Cup winner, this colt should be able to stav out a distance.

A big surprise was effected in the Railway at Marton when Huikai, eighth favourite in a twelve horse field, secured the verdict by defeating the favourite, Beaumont, by threequarters of a length. Huikai is by Tribulation —Carlatour and is a six-year-old. Ho had nine starts last year for a win and a second.
