TILDEN DEFEATS BRUGNON.

(Reeived 10.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 12.

Tilden defeated Brugnon, 6 —2, 61 } 6—o, in the semi-final of the Meadows Club annual invitation tournament at Southampton, New York. George Lott defeated Lacoste: 6 —4, 6—3, 6—l.

At Forest Hills, in the first match' of the Wightman Gup, Miss Helen Wills defeated Miss Joan Fry: 6— 2, 6—o. Experience told, the match lasting only 24 minutes. I Mrs Mallory defeated Mrs Godfree: 6—4, 6—2. The latter, in the first set, rallied bravely several times when Mrs Mallory was at set point, but weakened badly in the second, racing after the American's repeated crosscourt shots.

In the doubles Miss Sterry- and Mrs Hill (England) defeated Miss Goss and Mrs Chapin: . 7—5, 5—7, 7 —5. Miss Sterry was brilliant at. the net and fought an uphill battle all the way, but never quitted. Mrs Hill was steady at the back of the court, making a foil to Miss Sterry's wonderful volleys. Thus the British pair fought their way to victory by sterling play. The Americans lead by two matches to one on the first day's play.—-A. and N.Z.
