LEVEL CROSSING DANGERS

The toll of the level crossing in New Zealand is deplorably high. Barely a week passes without an addition to the total. The Whangarei district is not without its roll of dead and maimed. Several fatalities ha\ r e occurred within recent months. It Avas, therefore, hot without cause that the Whangarei County Council, at its meeting held on Friday, urged the Railway Department to instal wig-wag alarms at level crossings within the county. Particular stress AA’as placed upon the necessity for immediate attention to the Ruatangata crossing, but, as members stated, there is urgent need for effective alarms at other points. Safeguards against continuance of lamentable accidents Avill, avo knoAv, cost money, but, compared Avith the loss and suffering which may be caused,at any moment, and Avhich have occurred so often in the past, the expenditure on the erection of “ wig-Avags'' is infinitesimal. Between Whangarei and Hikurangi there are several death traps, and the Railway Department must carry a burden of responsibility till they are closed or safeguarded. We hope that the representations of the County Council Avilb bear fruit at the earliest possible moment.
