MORE PRODUCTION

CONTEMPORARY'S OPINION,

MANY SIDED QUESTION,

(Special to “Northern Advocate.")

AUCKLAND, This Day,

In an editorial under the caption of “More Production," an Auckland contemporary says: “A memorandum of the Ncav Zealand Farmers’ Union on production is incidentally an interesting introduction to the Dominion land conference that is to be held here in a week’s time. That conference will be concerned primarily with production, with stimulating land settlement, and drawing more from the farm. Much of what the Farmers’ Union says in its manifesto is obvious to all who take an intelligent interest in production, but there are many obvious things that need reiteration. The union calls for a higher level of production, a reduction in the costs of farming and better marketing. “The first can be obtained, not only by breaking in fresh land, but by subdividing present holdings and generally increasing productivity. Costs may be reduced in two main directions: by lowering the cost of living and improving farming methods. Marketing is an activity which has been the ground of fierce controversy, but, however much opinion may differ about compulsory control and price fixing, it is generally agreed that the Dairy Board is a much needed institution and that there is a great deal it can do to help the producers in the markets of the world.

‘‘The memorandum says that 54,000 dairy farmers have had much less to divide than 26,000 sheep farmers, but the Government returns published today indicate that the productivity of the dairy farm is increasing .faster ' than that of the meat producing farm. | There is sonic compensation for recent I disappointments in the increase in , butter and cheese production. In the i Auckland province 11,000,0001 b of bnti terfat is the increase for nine months j and, given a better tone on the Lonj don market, the outlook will not be ! .so doubtful as it has seemed. The * farmer is doing his part well and those who are in charge of his pro- | ducts carry a heavy responsibility, i but there is good reason to hope that good will arise from the marketing ] controversy ami the whole position of the industry be strengthened.”
