The fifth annual carnival of the Taihape St. Patrick’s Day Axemen’s and Athletic Club opened yesterday under favourable circumstances with the representation of athletes ' and axemen from all parts of the Dominion. Yesterday was largely taken up with running the heats of the £6O Sheffield Handicap and minor athletic events and the £IOO 14-ineh standing chop and £SO 12-inch standing chop, the finals for which will be held today.
