HUNGARIAN MUNITIONS
FRENCH DEFENCE ZONE. WITHDRAWAL SUBSTITUTE. (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, January 21. The ‘‘Daily Mail’s” Vicuna correspondent states that Dr Deutsch, the former Austrian .Socialist War Minister. asserts that complete equipment, including powerful artillery, for GOO- - troops, is stored in concealed depots throughout Hungary. There is also a modern factory near Lake Balaton, producing bombs and poison gas.
The statement has caused a sensation in Austria because the Socialists accept Dr Deutch’s view that Hungary is making plans to recover gonland with the assistance of Italy.' A message from Paris says it is stated in the newspaper “Echo de Paris” that the military chiefs, in compliance with M. Poincare’s instructions, arc preparing without delay a definite plan of defence works on the northern and north-eastern frontiers, as a substitute for the withdrawal of the Rhineland army. The depth of the defence zone will correspond with the modern battlefield. The Government will seek the necessary credits from Parliament as soon as the plan has been prepared.—A. and N.Z. i
