CRICKET

TRADES V. WAIPU. On Boxing Day a Whangarei Thursday Trades Cricket Club eleven visited Waipu and after an interesting contest, were defeated by the local exponents by the small margin of six runs. Yesterday the Whangarei Club repeated the visit, but did not perform nearly so well, being defeated in a whole-day match by 143 runs. Rain- fell at several stages in the game, making the task of the bowlers a very hard one. This -was particularly so in the early part of Waipu’s first innings, and coupled with the foot that in the persons of Forster and McKay Waipu .possesses two first-rate stonewallers, contributed greatly to demoralising the Traders’ attack. Several visitors were included in both' elevens. The teams were again entertained by a bounteous luncheon.

Arblaster, of North Shore, and Harvey were the first to become associated, both playing sparkling cricket. The pair put on 38 before Harvey went. Forster and Arblaster carried the score on to 61, and then he was dismissed by a good catch by E. Jennings off Butterworth. Hewlett, B. Sloane and Maiscy were dismissed cheaply, and then McKay joined Forster in what proved to be the most wearying partnership of the day. Of the two, McKay was the most enterprising, but the rate of scoring dropped to an average of one run an over. Before he was caught by S. Jennings at point off Dunn, Forster’s last scoring strokes had been nine successive twos. The innings came to an end soon after, with the total standing at 116,

■Collins and Dunn opened for Trades. Collins was clean bowled by the last ball of iSloane’s first over without" a run on the board. Dunn despatched the first ball delivered by Arblaster to the boundary, and then settled down to a valuable partnership with E. Jennings of 32 for the second wicket. Jennings appreciated Arblaster’s rather over-pitched bowling, and scored at a fast rate until his wickets were shattered by an express from Sloane. Fifteen runs later Dunn, in attempting a forcing shot off Forster, gave Colling an easy catch. After this,, with the exception- of Griffiths, who played an unusually sound innings for his runs, the side collapsed for a score of 71. Both Arblaster and Sloane captured two wickets with successive balls, but neither succeeded in accomplishing the hat trick. As an indication of the slow rate of scoring which prevailed for the greater part of Waipu’s second innings, it may be stated that only three runs were scored off the first 10 overs, seven of which were maidens. Edwards, keeping a steady length and using a disconcerting- spin, bowled five maidens on end. Forster again played the "rock” to advantage, scoring 57 in an hour and a half’s batting. He brightened up towards the end, scoring three fours in his innings. Of the remainder, Sloane batted soundly, and Hewlett and Abbott.- aggressively. Although four wickets had been mown down for four, runs the total finally reached 145.

Traders, faced with a leeway of 190, and with just under an hour to play, were in for a quick, refreshing innings. Dunn was the only one to strike form, knocking up 24 in fast jtime and taking the, total to 29 for two before his dismissal. Later Griffiths and Wakelin temporarily stopped a rot which had set in.-v(aoi However, Arblaster’s tricky slows, and Hewlett’s accurate trundling proved too much for the visitors, who were all out for the meagre total of 47. The Waipu attack was well varied and very strong. Although there were several fine catches taken, the fielding of the Traders was not up to standard. The detailed scores are as follows: —
