TOTALISATOR INVESTMENTS. BIG DECLINE RECORDED. AUCKLAND, This Day. The amount invested on the totalisator during the Auckland summer racing and . trotting carnival which closed yesterday was substantially smaller than a year ago. The actual sum put through during the seven days was £547,488, compared with £617,892 a year ago, a decrease of £70,403. , There was a decrease of £66,355 for the Auckland Racing Club’s four-day meeting, at Ellerslie, and a much smaller decline of £4,048 for the Auckland Trotting Club’s three-day meeting at Alexandra Park.

To some extent the decline in the value of the investments may be attributed to the wet weather, that has been so disappointing a feature of the meetings, also, there were 28 races at Ellerslie on this occasion compared with 29 last year and 32 the year before. However, neither of these factors can account for so considerable a drop in'the totalisator investments, represented by a margin of £70,000. A more salient cause is, the prevailing tightness of money, evidence of which is not confined to the racecourse.

It is interesting to note a general decline in totalisator returns throughout the Dominion in recent months. Thus, at the spring carnival, at Christchurch,' in November, there was a decrease of £31,500 compared with 1925. A decline has also been proceeding for several years. The highest known total for both the Auckland meetings were attained at the 1920-21 carnival. They were, Ellerslie £511,455; Alexandra Park £213,117; a grand total of £724,572. The revenue reaped by the State from taxes on investments, dividends and stakes during the week will be about £37,000, to which must he added a further sum received in the amusement tax on admission tickets. — Press Assn.
