SANGUINARY BATTLE
I REARGUARD SMASHED / MANY DEAD UNEUEIED. WOUNDED DIE IN SWAMPS. (Received 10.30 ;a.m.) MANAGUA, January 3. 1 The bloodiest battle in the present wax .occurred at Pearl Lagoon, lasting three days and ended in a ■week-end victory for the Liberals, who overcame the Conservative rearguard. They did not attempt to bury over 300 dead.
Many of the 150 wounded crawled into the swamps and died. Thousands of vultures hovered overhead today. The Conservatives retired from Ellluff disarmed by the United States naval forces.
President Diaz has issued a statement alleging that a third expedition has been sent by the Calles Government against Nicaragua, consisting of arms, ammunition, aeroplanes and Mexican military personnel.
