LOCARNO POLICY

I FRANCE’S GOOD FAITH APPLAUDED BY HOLY SEE. M. BRIAND VINDICATED. (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, January 2. The ■ Paris correspondent of the “Times” says unusual interest is attached to a speedy by the Papal Nuncio, Cardinal Maglione, at M. Doumergue’s New Year reception to the diplomatic corps. Cardinal Maglione was obviously instructed by the Holy See and proclaimed the Pope's approval of France’s policy, resulting in the Pacts of Locarno and Germany’s entry into the League of Nations. This is remarkable testimony to M. Briand, and will embarass the Catholic Nationalist Press, to which his policy is distasteful. —Times.

FRENCH PRESS COMMENTS. GREAT PLEASURE EXPRESSED (Received 9 a.m.) PARIS, January 2. “Le Temps” expresses pleasure at Cardinal Maglione’s unreserved approval of the Locarno policy and says: “The Holy See recognises the absolute sincerity and desire for peace dominating France’s foreign policy. “Le Journal des Debats” says: “France has been so often misunderstood that she will more appreciate, the homage rendered by so venerable and authoritative a voice.”

Both papers congratulate M. Doumergne on stressing the fact that peace is dependent upon the good faith of all parties.—Times.
