AWARUA RESCUE
WHERE CREDIT IS DUE. . KEEN-SIGHTED SEAMAN. SAVES -THE SITUATION. WELLINGTON, This Day. Commodore -Smaley has furnished the Minister ‘of Defence a special report on the finding and towing of the steamer Awarua. . During the, course of his report the Commodore draws special attention ‘to the excellent work done by able seaman Day, as lookout, in sighting such a small craft, which was only intermittently visible as she rose on the crest of the swell at a range of 10 miles or more. Had the Awarua not been sighted then, H.M.S. Dunedin would, have-been further to the southward of her on the next course, and she could not have been sighted during the proposed search. 1 The whole success of the scheme depended on the excellence of the lookouts. The Commodore also draws attention to the very good signalling, both day and night, carried out by the mate of the Awarua, without whose help communication between Ijhe ships would have been well-nigh impossible.—Press Assn.
