1 PUNCTURES, HILLS AND SPILLS. WELLINGTON, This Day. ' The road cycle race from Palmerston North to Wellington, of 102 miles, was won by V. Tippett, of Taranaki, who also had the fastest time of 6 hours 9 min 30 sec. A. Beattie, Wellington, 6 hours 43 min 27 sec was j second and H. S. Webber, Wellington, j 6 hours 54 minutes third. Forty started and over 20 finished. The, competitors had a head wind at the i start and then found the big hills pretty tiring. Webber led till past j Otaki, but the Paekakariki Hill | brought Tippett to the front and at j Pahautanui he had established a winning lead and came in 13 minutes | ahead of the next man. j Punctures, spills and collisions j knocked out many, contestants and j the hills finished .others. Sutherland, j a Wellington boy, 7 hours 154 mins, j was the youngest rider to finish and received a special prize. Tippett had ( two punctures and came in on a flat | tire. He attributes his win to good | training. Next to him the fastest ; times recorded were by Robinson and i Gone, of Wellington, fl hours 31 min ; 2 sec, and (1 hours 33 min 27 sees — Press Assn. .
