A man who was found drunk in Cameron Street last evening appeared before Mr L. J. Brake, J.P., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. He was stated to be a first offender and was fined 10s.
A number of territorial non-com-missioned officers attached to the Northern Command left Whangarei by the express this morning to attend a week’s course of training at th 6 Narrow Neck camp, Auckland.
Work on the road leading from Walton Street to the railway station has practically been completed. There is some work to be done at the approach at Walton Street and the fence taken down, after which the Borough Council will take over the road as far as the bridge. This route is being used already by pedestrians, but is not yet open to vehicular traffic.
“The exhibition of fowls was an eye-opener,” said Mr J. Noton, a prominent fancier in Whangarei, when asked what were his impressions of the National Show, at Palmerston North, from which he returned yester day. Ho accompanied the judge's, Messrs Nixon and Hansen, who both agreed that they had seen no better exhibition. The opportunity. was seized by Mr Noton to purchase a utility White Leghorn cockerel prizewinner, and also a hen. A big building full of cheese exhibits was another memorable sight, said the Whangarei resident, who had also been impressed by the way in which crowding and crushing were avoided, although the Show was so largely attended.
During the eighth week of the Auckland Poultry-beepers’ Association’s egg-laying competition at Mt. Albert there was no change in the relative positions of teams entered by Whangarei owners in the single birds section. Mr W. A. Griffiths, of Otaika Road, retains second place amongst the Black Orpingtons, Mr N. Dickey, of Whangarei, fifth, and Mr A, W. Bradley seventh in the White Leghorns division. There are 34 teams of Black Orpingtons, the two leading pens having yielded 147. Mr W. U. Timewell’s team has risen to equal fifth with 120, and Mr J. M. Steedman ’s has dropped tw-o places, to eleventh, while Ml W. A. Griffiths’ has gained from eighteenth to sixteenth position. There are 57 teams in the White Leghorns class, Mr. A. W. Bradley’s teams being fourth and seventh, and Mr N. Dickey’s tenth.
