TREACHEROUS PITCH AUSTRALIA v. YORKSHIRE. TWO VISITORS RUM OUT. (Received I p.m.) LONDON, June 17. FolloAving on abandonment of the first day’s play in the Australia-York-shire cricket match, the game got going at Sheffield today in fine weather, the wicket being easy. ‘There was an attendance of 12,000. The Australians took first strike, slow scoring being the rule, and at drawing of stumps for the day the position was as follows.— AUSTRALIA. First Innings. .
Collins, e MacAulay, b Robinson 13 Bardsley 1.b.w., b Kilner 21 Macartney, 1.b.w., b Rhodes .... 54 b Rhodes 8 Andrews, run out 0 Taylor, run out 0 Richardson, not out 35 Ryder, not out 17
Six wickets for 148 | The wicket-keeping was splendid, ' no extras being recorded. ) The start of the visitors’ innings was quiet. A liberal amount of sawdust was used. The batsmen gave constant attention to the pitch. 0 The first four overs produced only a single. In the fifth over there was an exciting episode. Collins played Robinson ■to Kilner at fine' leg, the fieldsman slipping. Bardsley called on Collins to run, but the latter declined. Bardsley, who was then half-way down the pitch, slipped and fell, but scrambled back to his -crease with a narrow margin to spare.
I "When ho had scored six Bardsley jhad another lucky escape. He was un--1 able to get out of the way of a rising [ball from Robinson, but Dolphin missed j the catch.
After half an hour’s play, in which only 11 runs were made, 'Six successive maidens were bowled.
Mac Aulay and Robinson - maintained an excellent length and kept the batsmen on the alert. Bardsley showed an inclination to make shots to the off side. Robinson played up to him, but Bardsley declined the temptation. Collins was equally careful. The first hour yielded only 22 runs. , Robinson, who was bowling consistently well, drew first blood, Collins, di- { verting a ball from him into the hands j of Mac Aulay at third slip, who held it well, low down. Macartney was shaky when opening. He was beaten by the first .two balls j from Robinson, but thereafter imparti ed much needed life to the game. He straight-drove Robinson and off-drove |Waddington. | Mac Aulay's length was at times un- | certain, but the batsmen treated him | respectfully. The brightness was only momentary. The appearance of Kilner and Wad-ding-ton with the ball demanded care. The scoring relapsed into an occasional •single, which was all the good fielding j permitted. j Eventually Kilner. got Bardsley with I his leg in front of the wicket, -the board then showing 59 runs for two wickets. Bardsley was a monument" of I patience. Woodfull -was in difficulties at opening, and rain, which had been threatening for an hour, commenced to fall, but play was continued." The light was j poor. • I
With the total at S 3 Woodfull was beaten by Rhodes' fourth ball. The next ball Andrews drove to Lnpton at deep mid-on. Andrews started to run, but fell full-length in ■the middle of the pitch and was 'unable to get home before Rhodes broke the wicket.
Taylor then attempted a short run and was run out by a brilliant return ly Kilner, who throw down the wicket from mid-on. The total at this stage was 83 for five wickets.
Richardson, in his first over from Rhodes, gave an easy chancy to Waddington at first slip which ho failed to hold.
Macartney all the time was playing confidently, but cautiously. ■Richardson, played both Rhodes and Mac Aulay with superb indifference. ■Shortly, after tea Macartney fell a victim to a ball which struck his leg and was slightly faster than the preceding .ones. He hit one six and five fours apd gave an excellent, all round display. The sixth wicket had added ,3,1 runs. ' j
Richardson, when at 18 was missed by Rhodes at cover point off Kilner. I
Richardson and Ryder carried on attractively till .5.30 p.m., when rain compelled an adjournment. Play was resumed at 6.10, but after four overs an appeal against the bad' light -was upheld.—Reuter.
