QUEEN CARNIVAL

GENERAL MEETING A meeting of'the General Committee of the Queen Carnival was hold in the dressing-shed at the Recreation Park. Thei e wore present—Messrs K. Me* Both (chairman), A. R. Merrington, Lister, Ross, J. 11. Smith, J. McKenj zic, R. Nesbitt, R. Cherrie, W J. Hansel], W. R. Harris, C. Stockley, C. jB. Gager and the secretary, Mr Smith. ( It was resolved to promote a concert for June 30, and that the ari rangomonts in connection with the same be loft in the hands of the three secretaries working in the interest of the respective queens. It was decided that the committee solicit the services of the Rev. T. W. Edwards in connection with the Coronation Committee, and that a letter be written to him respectfully asking him to officiate.

FINANCIAL POSITION. The many supporters of the Queen Carnival will be pleased to learn that the combined efforts of the three queen committees have netted the gratifying sum of £2OO. Operations are still proceeding apace, and by the time the campaign ceases at the end of this month it is anticipated that the necessary funds will be available.

SWIMMING BATHS. A number of the residents of Hikurangi arc under the mistaken impression that, if the efforts of the Queen Carnival realise £250 (supplemented by a Government subsidy of £ for-£), this amount will be sufficient to construct up-to-date swimming baths. It is authoritatively stated that the scheme will involve an expenditure of over £6OO. Estimates of the cost of the pool, allowing for dressing sheds, conveniences, etc., submitted to the general committee exceed the latter sum.

VOTES RECORDED. The position with regard to the number of votes attained to date by the various queens seeking election in connection with the Queen Carnival is as • follows:—Sports Queen, 5200; School Queen, 5120; 'and Trades Queen, 5000. Each week until the carnival ceases the aggregate number of votes recorded by the respective queens will be available for publication.

TRADES QUEEN. , * BRIDGE TOURNEY. On Monday night the weekly series of the bridge tournament inaugurated by supporters of the Trades Queen was held in the Criterion Theatre. The usual good attendance was maini tained, and 20 games were played. The {prizes for the tourney were donated Jby Mrs A. M. G. Ward and Mrs G. j Martin respectively. The former donjated a pair of silk hose for competijtion amongst the ladies, and the latj ter a tomahawk for the men. Mrs J. Pugo secured the ladies’ prize and Mr S. Gallon the men’s. Supper was dispensed at 10 o’clock, after which the gathering dispersed. The Trades Queen Carnival Committee is arranging for the production of a one-act play, entitled “Mrs' Tan Cready’s Trouble,’’ which will be staged in the Criterion Theatre early next week. The east consists of all the available lady shop assistants, and according to reports concerning the rehearsals the play promises to be a huge success.

SPORTS QUEEN. The dance held in the Criterion Theatre last Friday evening was well patronised, and as a result of the venture the Sports Queen Carnival Fund was augmented to the extent of £7. Several dancing competitions figured on the programme and lent greatly to the enjoyment of the evening’s entertinment. Supper was dispensed at 11 o ’clock and. dancing continued until night PADDY’S MARKET AND BAZAAR. Tonight the committee will bo engaged in conducting a Paddy’s market and bazaar, and judging by the gifts in hand a very successful evening is assured. Owing to the inclement weather experienced during the past two or Ihree week-ends, activities in connection with the bottle-shy and hoop-la s f a!l have been curtailed to a large extent, but the committee has hopes of doing future business with this popular entertainment. Towards the end of the month the committee contemplates holding a concert, and preparations are being made to procure all the best local talent.

In connection with the competitions for the sleeveless pull-over and the travelling rug, Miss D. Teesdalc won the former and Mr J. Davidson the latter.
