HOCKEY

THE TRUEST)AY COMPETITIONS. Games were played in both ladies’ and the men’s sections of the competition under the auspices of the Whangarei Hockey Association yesterday. The conditions were ideal. A cool wind succeeded the light rain which had fallen before the commencement, and the only defect was the poor light in which the concluding stages of the ladies’ games wore played. Notwithstanding this, the standard of play established in tho ladies’ section was superior to tho exhibition given by tho men. Improvement on the form shown by the same teams last week, was exhibited by the Thursday Trades Club in the men’s section, and by Old Girls. The former team had been defeated by the only goal scored in a game in which their opponents had tho better of the exchanges throughout, but yesterday the draw which resulted when they met the same team was a. fair indication of the' run of the play. Old Girls, playing together with much better combination than on the previous occasion, fully extended the formidable Avoca team. The High School second eleven put up a great fight against the Manugakaramea ladies, "but the more experienced side ran out winners by tho odd goal in three.

MEN’S SECTION. HUTA v. THURSDAY TRADES CLUB. The game between Huia and Thursday Trades Club was played on the High School No I ground. Trades won the toss and elected to play against the slope for the first spell. Huia played a man short throughout. Huia carried the ball with them from the bully, and in the first minute of tho game Connell, the Hnia centre forward, scored from a melee in front of the circle. In the play which followed this sensational opening the Huia eleven were out to still further increase the margin, and they kept up an unceasing attack in close proximity to tho Traders’ citadel. It was only throng.r the sterling defence work of Moore, senr., the Traders’ goalie, that time and time again dangerous forward rushes by the Huia forwards did not result nr further scores being recorded. The Huia shooting in the circle certainly was rather weak, but this did not detract from Moore"’s excellent display. Berry Moore and Morgan yrere occasion-ally -seen 'to -advantage in brisk forward play in the Huia circle, and it was from one of these efforts that Moore capped off a fine 1 solo effort by chopping a hot one between the posts.—Huia 1, Trades 1.1

After this score play became more even, Trades more than bolding their own at times. The first half ended w.rh the score unchanged.

The second half was well contested and even- throughout, .with Trades having slightly the better of play. Up and down rushes, in which both circles were in turn invaded, saw good movements break clown either by poor shooting cr good saves by tho respective goalies. In the first half the Trades had conceded a large number of corners, but in no instance did Huih avail themselves of the golden’ chances which offered. Few corners eventuated in the second spell, and these were mostly against Huia, the traders twice failing to establish a lead when there was practically an open goal-mouth before them. Bongard, for Huia, and Percivai and Tupp, for Trades, gave sound exhibitions in their respective back divisions. The game ended in midfield with the scores equal. Messrs. G. Larking and W. N, Jack proved efficient referees. LADIES’ SECTION. AVOCA v. OLD GIRLS. It was generally expected that Avoca would have no difficulty in defeating the Old Girls team, but this did not prove to be the ease, and a very fast, even contest was won by the Avoca team, after goals had been scored alternatively, just before the final whistle sounded. ]

For the winners Miss G. Lowe, Mrs. A. Martin and Miss O’Grady were the scorers, while for Old Girls Miss W. Lamb and Miss M. Millington netted goals. Mr. G. Larking refereed.

MAUNGAKARAMEA 2, HIGH SCHOOL B 1.

This game was played on the No. 1 ground and resulted in a very hard tussle. Tho younger High School girls stood up to their redoubtable opponents until the call of time, and in the opening exchanges they had slightly tho better of play. Miss Harvey and Miss Berridgc scored for Manngakaramca, and Miss P. Wilson for High School. What, if it had been according to rule, would have been the equalising goal was gained for High School early in the second half, but as the shooter was outside tho circle, tho score was not allowed. Mr. W. N. Jack was referee.
