Mr W. Jones M.P., for Marsden left by the mid-day train today for Wellington, in order to be present at the opening of Parliament. By the death of the Rev. H. E. Dewsbury, who died at Auckland on Tuesday, there passed away one who, in his prime, was a brilliant preacher and elocutionist. Ho was a remarkably fine exponent of Dickens’ characters, his “Dickens Evenings” being in great demand in centres where he was stationed as a Methodist clergyman. He was 77 years of age at the time of his death. (>■ Mr George Charles Hoffmann, a Dunedin chemist, aged 57 years, who died after a short illness, was president of the Dunedin branch of the Pharmaceutical Association, and also a member of the Pharmacy Board, for which body he was examiner. The late Mr Hoffmann was keenly interested in the study of astronomy, and was president of the astronomical branch of the Otago Institute.
